What is Neuro Linguistic Programming and uses of NLP.

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a series of techniques or processes that help us to know and understand ourselves better and improve our communication with others. It is a model of how the mind works and how what we think affects our physical and mental state.

It teaches us how to “program” our minds to achieve our personal, professional and business goals. It shows how our beliefs and thoughts influence our mood and the actions we take.

Based on our experiences in life, our social and cultural environment, we create a set of beliefs that are reflected in our way of thinking and acting. If for example a child grows in a totally male dominating atmosphere, her beliefs, her way of being and acting, will be very different from a child that grows in an environment where there is equality between women and men.

The main objective of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is to study, and understand how these beliefs are formed. How we “program them in our mind” and develop processes that can help change that programming if necessary.

What we think, how we talk to ourselves, influences on the emotions we feel in a daily basis and this determines our beliefs and our actions. If a father tells his son that he serves no purpose and will never be someone important and he says all the time. The child will, in most cases, create that belief and therefore ” being good for nothing ” will form part of his programming and beliefs.

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) seeks to understand how we program ourselves that way and what are the mental patterns that can help modify or eliminate limiting beliefs as mentioned above.

It’s all based on the correct use of what we think, the language we use to communicate with ourselves or with others. We all know for example that the tone of voice when someone tells us or ask us something, create a different reaction in us.

The whole purpose of NLP is to modify or eliminate limiting beliefs or patterns and create a positive change of status through thought and language … mainly directed to your subconscious.

An example from my personal life is a time when I developed a phobia of heights and bridges. It was not a normal fear, but an irrational fear, senseless. Crossing a short bridge will provoque panic and paralyze me. It was thanks to NLP and Hypnosis that I managed to overcome it completely.

NLP is very effective with phobias and fears. It is important to notice. Always consult your doctor first and note that neither hypnosis nor NLP are 100% effective. Sometimes they do not work. And another problem is that there are not many scientific studies of how NLP works and its effectiveness. Yes, there are many studies on the use and effectiveness of hypnosis. When I talk about the effectiveness of NLP it is more based on clients testimonials and testimonials from others who have used NLP.

Some of the uses of NLP are:

  • Allergies.
  • Fears and phobias.
  • Stress.
  • Depression,
  • Self esteem.
  • Addictions.
  • Personal growth.
  • In sports.
  • Improving athletic performance.
  • Learning.
  • Development and achievement of personal goals, professional and business. Team work. Solutions to problems in the workplace.
  • Motivation, communication, and assertiveness.
  • Couple relationships.
  • Sales.
  • Changing limiting beliefs.
  • Developing positive beliefs.
  • Team work.
  • Learning and creativity.
  • Solution of personal and labor disputes.
    And more

The key and the power of NLP is that it teaches us and shows us how our thoughts, the language we use to communicate with ourselves or others influences on the results. If you look, you will find that many sales persons, political and religious leaders use ideas based on Neurolinguistic Programming.

If we learn to communicate better with ourselves we can be happier, healthier and more successful. If we learn to better communicate with others, we can influence our relations with others in a positive way.

Of course as any technique that has to do with the mind it can be used with intent to manipulate, but that does not make NLP bad or dangerous. It would be like saying that a scalpel is bad or dangerous. The technique or process or instrument is neutral, it all depends how to use and if you learn how to use it positively can easily fend who try to use it on you negatively.

It’s like using the “Reverse Psychology” where the intent is that the person will do something we want, but you ask the opposite. The technique itself is not bad and can be used very effectively in the interrogation, and authoritarian people or children.

Most human beings we do not like to be “ordered to do something” … Have you noticed for example that telling a child not to do something is like asking him or her to do it?

Finally I mention reverse psychology because it is simply a technique, similar techniques are used in NLP and Hypnosis. They are not dangerous or bad in itself.
